Advanced Metering Infrastructure
At BGE we continue to seek new ways to improve how we do business. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is another innovative way BGE is preparing for the future. BGE is currently testing the AMI communication technology. To conduct this test, BGE installed a limited number of advanced meters. These meters and the communication technology test will not impact the reliability of electric or gas service.
AMI Meters
AMI meters, often known as “smart meters,” are programmed to communicate electronically with BGE via a secure radio frequency. The meter sends BGE daily energy consumption data, which will be stored and used to compute your monthly bill. Energy consumption is tracked hourly for both gas and electric meters. Once the program is fully operational, it will no longer be necessary for BGE to manually read your meter. We will be able to provide you with accurate, timely usage information, regardless of weather conditions, without having to set foot on your property.
Benefits of Advanced Meters
The future of advanced meters brings online energy management. AMI will offer more control than ever before for managing energy consumption. You will be able to track your energy use online at bge.com. Also, you will be able to see how you are using energy, monitor energy peaks and even learn ways to better manage energy use through our demand response and energy efficiency programs.
Value-Added Benefits
Advanced meters will also provide improved services to you including:
- The ability to view your gas and electric consumption data
- More timely, accurate bills with fewer estimates
- More promptly fulfilling requests to start or stop service
- Ease in changing energy suppliers
- Tools to track and monitor energy usage patterns
- New time-of-use rate structure options
Revolutionary Outage Detection
The advanced meter is programmed with a revolutionary outage detection feature, which will provide BGE and you with real-time outage information. This means we can respond to outages and restore your electric service quicker than ever before.
Availability
We are currently testing the advanced metering communication system. Assuming regulatory approval, eventually all customers will have advanced meters. We will update this site as we get further along in the testing phase and new information is available.
