Online Energy Calculator
With BGE’s Online Energy Calculator, information on how your home uses energy—and how much it’s costing you—is right at your fingertips. Find answers to such questions as:
- What are the biggest and smallest contributors to my energy bill?
- Why are my energy costs different from last month or last year?
You can use the calculator to build a virtual model of your home and identify ways to save energy and money, by entering data such as square footage, date of construction, water heater type, average heating and cooling settings, and more.
How It Works
The calculator will provide you with a variety of reports on your home’s energy use and costs. When you enter your account number, the calculator will use actual gas and electric consumption data from your billing records and compare it to that of homes similar to yours in BGE’s service area. The calculator also factors in weather, number of days in a billing period, and other information.
Using the Calculator
- Results: The calculator’s reports and results may not exactly match your BGE bills. Many factors, such as a pool or hot tub, a secondary heating or cooling system, changes in thermostat settings on very hot or cold days, or extended stays by guests, can affect the calculator’s results. Please use the calculator for general guidance on how you can reduce your energy consumption.
- Budget Billing: Customers on Budget Billing, those with estimated bills, and/or customers who use a gas and/or electric supplier other than BGE also will notice slight differences between the costs predicted by the calculator and their actual BGE bills.
- Information Entered: Please fill out the Home Profile as accurately as possible. The calculator’s output can vary greatly depending on the accuracy of this information. For tips to help you make the right selections, place your mouse pointer over the question mark next to each field.
- BGE Account Number: Be sure to have your BGE account number handy (located at the top of your BGE bill). If you have lived in your home for less than 10 months or if you have not entered your account number, the calculator will not import gas and electric usage data from your billing records. Instead, it will use the “Estimator” mode, which estimates your home’s usage for the past year based on what you select as your home’s characteristics.
Understanding Your Results
- Dates: Dates noted in the calculator’s output tables and charts are your meter reading dates.
- Usage and Costs: The expected usage and costs are based on average homes similar to yours, so you may see some differences between expected vs. actual usage and costs.
- Temperature: There might be slight differences between the monthly temperatures indicated by the calculator and the monthly temperatures on your BGE bill.
- Results: In some cases, results might be rounded up or down to the nearest unit.
